Chapter Eight

Jedrek shook his head trying to wrest the grogginess from his mind. He hadn’t thought he had imbibed that much. His plan had been to claim Salem and start her transition. As he tried to stretch, he realized he was tied up. More than that, when he scented the air, he could detect nothing of her. Opening his eyes, he saw the darkness peeping through an opening in the back of the tent... Salem had gone!

Foolish female, he thought as he struggled against his bonds. She knew nothing, or at least very little, of their territory and the dangers that lurked there. While the necklace might offer her some protection, without his claiming mark on her neck, there would be those who would try to take her as their own. For his mate was one well worth having. Even trussed up as he was, he had to admire her bravery and resourcefulness. He meant to see that in the future she had more appropriate venues for her strengths and skills.

Jedrek managed to sit up, hook his gag on the edge of the bedpost and remove it. He shouted for his men. Soto was the first to arrive and blocked the rest from entering, assuring them that all was well, and he would be able to aid their chieftain.

“Care to tell me again why this female is the one you want?” he teased.

Jedrek laughed. “How can you ask? My mate is intelligent, brave, a strategic thinker...”

“And missing. Did you miss the part where she’s missing in a territory she doesn’t know anything about?”

“No, and if you’ll untie me, I can get after her.”

“You don’t know where she’s gone. We can send our best trackers...”

“Who will find nothing,” chuckled Jedrek. “Salem will have found a boat and headed down river to the capitol.”

“The river doesn’t go to the capitol.”

“But it goes within ten miles, which would be easily traversed if she ever got there. I want you to take a small group of warriors and ride hard for the capitol. Make sure she hasn’t arrived there and then set a trap with part of them to ensure she doesn’t.”

“Do you really want our men to know you lost to a woman?”

“What is it you think I lost, Soto? What I see is that I was right to go to Earth, right to go around the Coalition, and right to claim Salem as my mate. The only mistakes I made were not to initiate the Gift and not to recognize her discontent outside of our furs and seek to reassure her that her place is here with me. Once you have established that she hasn’t reached the capitol, send a small contingent with a spare horse in a direct line to the river to await my mate and me. Once we have reached them, I will send one back to summon you back to our village.”

Soto nodded grudgingly. “If I’m leading a party to try and intercept her, what do you plan to do?”

“Once you untie me.
